Amazing Op-Ed in TIME

Public historian Jason Steinhauer recently published a fantastic op-ed piece in TIME on the current debates about the study of history.  People seem most upset when students don’t know a series of facts, but do they realize how many facts are out there?  Every year, there is another set of facts (in terms of new events) at global, national, regional, and local scales, as well as new published books and articles, new oral histories recorded, new architectural and archaeological surveys and reports, new acquired and indexed archival records, new political and media treatments of history to sort through…  Did they miss that the study of history is about the “close reading” that Jason mentions, the analysis, the interpretation, the communication about the past — any part of the past that these students will come across.
